“At the beginning of this year I drew, directly on to the etching plate, a series of images in a mode of tableaux vivantes. They depict the curious and hidden habits that might be indulged in‘ behind closed doors and drawn curtains’.
This series of prints, takes its inspiration from a collection of Travel books dating back to the 17th and 18th century.
The Travel books which were family heirlooms, were an inheritance – from her father’s own collection (he was an antiquarian book-seller in The Hague) – she draws on vignettes / snippets extracted from these travelers’ observations and gives her own response to the strange and foreign places they describe
Extracts from these books have been chosen and printed on Korean paper to accompany the etchings with chine collé, printed on Somerset soft white textured paper.
There are 19 prints, ed 30 in the series La Petite Mort.
The first five sets of the edition have been presented in two boxes, the first box Is called “Notes from an Incomplete Journey” and consists of a dark grey cloth box, 32 x 38 cm, containing a title page, five text sheets and five of the etchings.
